INTRODUCTION


Rabbits are mammals of the family Leporidae which can be found in many parts of the earth. Formerly, these animals are wild animals living in Africa up to the European continent. In its development in 1912, rabbits were classified in the order Lagomorpha. This Order is divided into two families, namely Ochtonidae (kind of clever pika whistling) and Leporidae (including types of rabbits and hares). Origin of the word comes from Dutch rabbit, namely konijntje meaning "kitten". The Latin name for the rabbit is generally Orictolagus cuniculus. This shows that the community began to recognize rabbit archipelago when the colonial period, whereas in Sumatra Island there is one native species Sumatran striped rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri) that was discovered in 1972.
There are currently a number of types of rabbits became a pet and animal meat. Several kinds of rabbits as animal meat also is used as a pet. Rabbit breed in the world, namely Continental Giant is usually used as animal meat, but there are also the preserve and has officially become the biggest rabbit in the world with a steeper / length + 4 feet 4 inches (132 centimeters) and weighs 3.5 stones (22, 2 kilograms).
